Who is stronger, a rhino or an elephant? Size and strength

More elephant facts (14)

None of the zoo, wildlife database or research sources behind this article records a contest between a rhino and an elephant or states which of the two is stronger. The San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance does say that only elephants trump white rhinos in size, and it says an elephant’s trunk is strong enough to pick up large tree trunks.

Animal Diversity Web gives male African elephants as ranging from 4,500 to 6,100 kg in mass, and adult white rhinoceroses as weighing approximately 1000 to 3600 kg. It adds that African elephants are currently the largest terrestrial organism.

What elephants can do

An elephant’s trunk is also agile enough to pick up a single piece of straw, the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance says. Animal Diversity Web says African elephants of both sexes carry two thick, curved ivory tusks that can reach up to 350 cm in length. When they want bark or roots, it says, African elephants will overturn a tree to reach them more easily.

White rhino horns

The San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance says a white rhino has two horns at the end of its nose: a larger one at the front and a small inner one. It adds that rhino horns are keratin, the material human fingernails and hair are made of.

Other weights

For female African elephants, Animal Diversity Web gives a mass that can range from 2,000 to 3,500 kg. For black rhinos, it says the weight on average is between 800 and 1400 kg.

Predators and threats

The San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance says the large size of white rhinos protects them from savanna predators such as lions and cheetahs. For a healthy adult elephant, it says, the only real threat is people.
