How to color an axolotl like the real thing
Start with dark olive, brown and gray: most real axolotls are dark. The San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance says they have dark coloring that matches their muddy lake habitat, and the Ambystoma Genetic Stock Center (AGSC) at the University of Kentucky describes wild-type axolotls as very dark with yellowish or greenish mottling. Pet and lab axolotls come in more colors. These are the forms documented by research and keeper sources:
- Wild type: a dark body, brownish-green and mottled, with gold or yellowish speckles. Non-melanoid axolotls have a shiny ring around the pupil, so add one. A keeper guide lists dark purple-gray gills. Use dark brown, olive green and gray, then dots of gold.
- Leucistic (called “white” by the AGSC): white or pinkish skin and black eyes. A keeper guide lists bright red gills. Leave the body white or pale pink, color the eyes black and the gills red.
- Golden albino: a yellow to gold body with red or pink eyes. Use yellow and gold, with pink for the eyes.
- White albino: looks like any white axolotl, but the eyes are pinkish instead of black, the AGSC says. Keep the body white and color the eyes pink.
- Melanoid: a black animal with no shiny ring around the eye. Use black and dark gray and skip the gold ring.
- Axanthic albino: paler than a golden albino. The AGSC calls it a paler yellow, and the axolotl.org page says it starts almost white and turns yellow with age. Use pale yellow.
- Copper: in a 2024 Scientific Reports study, larvae had fewer dark pigment cells than wild type, and adults developed an even copper skin color. Use a warm copper-brown with some yellow.
Can axolotls be blue?
No blue axolotl appears in the AGSC strain descriptions. The Minecraft Wiki states that the blue axolotl is the one variant in the game that is not based on a real color form. On paper you can use any color you like, but a true-to-life axolotl stays in the browns, grays, whites, yellows and pinks above.
What is the rarest axolotl color?
No research source we found ranks axolotl colors by rarity. One keeper guide, ExoPetGuides (July 2026), names true chimeras and mosaics as the rarest. For a quick pick, the wild-type dark axolotl is the color you would see in nature.

Printing tips for axolotl coloring pages
Choose US Letter in the US and Canada and A4 in most other countries. Print at 100 percent, also called “actual size”, so the drawing fills the page and the lines stay sharp. Plain printer paper works for crayons and colored pencils. For markers or paint, use heavier paper or slip a spare sheet behind the page so the ink does not soak through. The drawings are pure black line art on white, so the black-and-white print setting saves color ink.
